Experience Required
Previous experience is not required. You will be provided instruction on operating the houseboat, safety requirements, how to read maps, buoys and channel markets. For the first few minutes someone may join you out of the harbor to ensure you are comfortable with the houseboat. The designated captain must be 21 years of age or older and hold a valid driver’s license.
Licensing
You do not require a boating license (Pleasure Craft Operator Card) to rent a houseboat. Prior to departure you will be provided a safety checklist for review. Be sure to ask any questions if you are not sure. Once completed you will be issued a temporary license that is good for your trip. You will need to keep this document readily available if request by officials.

Electrical Outlets
As with many houseboats there are not electrical outlets available for small appliances. If you need to charge any devices a cigarette lighter device is available. You will need to bring your own inverters.

Linens are provided by Houseboat Holidays at no additional cost. You will need to bring your own towels.
Pets
Pets are welcome onboard. Houseboat Holidays reserves the right to charge an additional $50 for additional cleaning if required.

There are a number of additional costs that you should budget for during your vacation and will depend on the duration of your trip and the distance traveled. Each operator has different policies and should be discussed directly with them. Some costs will or may include:

Local Weather
May to October weather for Gananoque, Ontario, in half-month steps (days 1–15 and 16 through the end of the month). Air, precipitation, and wet days use nearby Kingston Climate observations, about 30 km away. Water temperature is the St. Lawrence surface in the 1000 Islands.
- Each tile is one half-month from May through October. Early is days 1–15. Late is day 16 through the end of the month. Every tile shows a value.
- Air temperature, precipitation, and wet-day percentage are 2021–2025 daily averages from Environment and Climate Change Canada, Kingston Climate (climate ID 6104142). High and low are the mean of daily maximum and minimum temperatures. Precipitation is the mean of each year’s half-month total; missing days are not filled in. A wet day has at least 0.2 mm. Days flagged missing are left out. Every half-month has observations on at least 80% of its days, so all five years are included. The largest gap is three days, in early May 2025.
- Precipitation is liquid equivalent (rain plus the water in any snow), in millimetres per half-month.
- Sunshine is not biweekly. Kingston Climate does not record bright sunshine, and no station near Kingston has daily bright-sunshine hours after the mid-1990s (Kingston A, climate ID 6104146, ends in 1994). Each month’s existing normal is repeated on both of that month’s tiles. Those hours are the monthly values already published for this listing, not a 2021–2025 average.
- Surface water temperature is the mean of hourly readings at NOAA CO-OPS station 8311062 (Alexandria Bay, NY), on the St. Lawrence about 18 km east of Gananoque. Years are 2012–2018 and 2021–2025 (local standard time), the same complete seasons as the monthly water series. 2020 is omitted because May through early August have no readings. May–October 2019 is complete and is left out so these halves stay on that same set of years.
- Tile temperatures are rounded to the nearest degree.
